While the purchase price\nof your cottage may be exactly what you bargained for, it\u2019s important to know\nabout those additional cottage expenses that can get you bogged down\nfinancially. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cottage is more than your weekend or\nsummer getaway; it\u2019s a great investment! You\u2019ll want to keep it well-maintained\nand protected year-round while making amazing memories with your friends and\nfamily. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a list of some standard cottage\nexpenses you can expect to pay for so that nothing comes as an unexpected or\nunwelcome surprise: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Standard cottage expenses &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Fun toys <\/strong>\u2013 Let\u2019s start with the most\nenjoyable items your cottage may need! Boats, water skis, canoes, rafts, paddle\nboats, hammocks, and outdoor furnishings are just some of the awesome items to\nboost your summer fun. The downside? You also need to pay for gas, life jackets,\nand boat licenses. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Guests \u2013 <\/strong>If you know you\u2019ll be hosting a\nfair bit, be prepared to buy extra food, drinks and even gasoline to keep that\nboat or ATV going strong. Keep in mind that most guests will gladly bring meals\nand help with costs if needed \u2013 you just need to ask. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Property taxes <\/strong>\u2013 There is no escaping\ntaxes, even at the cottage. In fact, property taxes in the Parry Sound region\n(especially waterfront) have been steadily going up, and you may find yourself with\na bigger bill than anticipated. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Insurance &amp; utilities<\/strong> \u2013 Make sure\nyou have a good insurance policy for your cottage that covers damage, theft,\nand liability. While there are still some cottages and cabins that are fully\noff the grid, most cottages have hydro costs, as well as Internet, cable or\nstreaming costs.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Road access\/winter maintenance \u2013 <\/strong>Some\nrural\/unassumed roads need to be ploughed in winter at your own expense.\nFurther, heavy snowfall can damage your roof or eaves, so you may have to clear\nit yourself or pay a service to do so. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Regular maintenance &amp; repairs \u2013 <\/strong>If\nyou love DIY projects, then you can save a lot by doing regular repairs and\nmaintenance at your cottage. Just like owning a home, you may need to fix or\nreplace windows, appliances, furniture, decks, docks, septic systems, BBQs and\neverything else. Having money set aside for ongoing repairs is always a good\nidea. &nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Security<\/strong> \u2013 While this is an optional\nexpense, it can really help provide peace of mind for those weeks and months\nwhere you\u2019re not able to get to your cottage.
