Talking about it with your family\nwhen planning out your estate, however, is a very important conversation that\ncan help put your mind, and everyone else\u2019s, at ease not just now, but in years\nto come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in the process of drafting up\nyour will or you\u2019ve already done so, be sure to sit down with your adult\nchildren and talk about it.&nbsp; There\u2019s so\nmuch to be gained by doing so.&nbsp; Not only\ndoes it help alleviate a lot of questions or concerns that everyone may have,\nit can allow for positive discussions, clarifications and input\u2026and it may even\nuncover key information you need to make your estate plan work better. Here are\nthe topics that should be included in your family discussion about your estate\nplan: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Your estate <\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your estate is made up of not just your\nassets (real estate, savings, investments, autos, jewelry, family antiques, life\ninsurance policies, etc.) but your loans and other debts too. It\u2019s up to you to\nbequeath your assets as you see fit when drafting a will. However, you may want\nto talk to your family to seek any guidance and find out if there is anything\nthey do or don\u2019t want. For example, that stamp or coin collection you were\nhoping to pass down may be of no interest to your kids, in which case you can\ndecide if you want to sell it now and enjoy any profits! Keep in mind that\nalthough you are asking for input, you are under no pressure to promise\nanything to anyone; in fact, a will made under duress (against your wishes) is\nnot legal or valid. The point of this family discussion is simply to outline\nthe basics of your estate and what your plan is. It\u2019s also a good opportunity\nfor them to ask questions at this time and share their feelings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Your will executor<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have someone in mind to act as your\nwill\u2019s executor and manage your estate upon your death? It can be your spouse, an\nadult child or an externally outsourced person\u2026as long as you appoint someone\nwho is organized and otherwise capable of handling this important job. It\u2019s\nadvisable to select someone who is able to attend to the various funeral\ndetails, financials, legal appointments and so on in person. After having a\ndiscussion with your family, you may be surprised to learn that the person you\nhad in mind can\u2019t manage this task, and together you can explore other options\nto find the best person for the job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Power of Attorney<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In the event that you become incapable of\nmaking decisions about your care (including end-of-life care), health or\nfinances, you should appoint an \u2018attorney\u2019 to manage the medical, legal and\nfinancial decisions on your behalf, called \u2018power of attorney\u2019. &nbsp;Similar to choosing a will executor, it\u2019s\nimportant to make sure your choice is based on who\u2019s willing and who\u2019s best for\nthe job and not necessarily who\u2019s the oldest, or who lives the closest for\nexample. A conversation with your family about your wishes can clear the air\nand set things straight so that everyone\u2019s on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Keeping the peace<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people worry about what\u2019s most fair or\njust for their loved ones when drafting their wills, but it all boils down to\nyour own personal wishes and what you believe to be appropriate for the\ndistribution of your assets. Keeping the family peace shouldn\u2019t be the sole\ninfluence when planning your estate; it has to be what you feel is best. One\nway to help avoid family squabbles after you pass away is to have a\nconversation about your will and your decisions now.
